About Yohimbe Tree Bark
The bark of the Corynanthe yohimbe tree is used as a traditional remedy, prepared into a liquid tincture or a powdered extract. This evergreen tree is native to West Africa and can be found in the countries of Congo, Zaire, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, and Gabon.
This substance is used for a variety of purposes in alternative medicine, ranging from the treatment of anxiety to the improvement of libido. Today, it is most commonly taken as a fat burner.
The primary active ingredient in Corynanthe yohimbe bark is called yohimbine. This alkaloid is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist that has a number of effects on the body.
Specifically, studies indicate that yohimbine increases the release of norepinephrine in the body, works as an anti-diuretic, increases the release of noradrenaline and increases sexual excitability.
In the United States, products that contain yohimbe bark or yohimbe bark extract (alone or in combination with other ingredients) are marketed as herbal dietary supplement products generally labeled as athletic performance and/or sexual enhancement products.
Genuine Yohimbe Bark (which does contain the alkaloid yohimbine) is purchased in bulk by the pharmaceutical industry that produces yohimbine tablets (primarily Plantecam in Cameroon).
Corynanthe yohimbe may improve the symptoms of anxiety in some patients. For the treatment of anxiety, 10 mg of yohimbine may be taken once each week. For best results, this supplement is combined with formal therapy.
